Keeping WhatsApp and your own number with a travel e-SIM

WhatsApp follows your number, not your SIM. How to set up two lines so WhatsApp works on your number over travel data, and the two mistakes to avoid.

The most common worry before buying a travel e-SIM: “Will I lose my WhatsApp?” You will not. WhatsApp is tied to your phone number, not to the SIM that carries your data, so it keeps working on your own number while the travel e-SIM provides the internet. There are only two things to get right.

How it works

A phone with e-SIM can run two lines at once. Your home SIM keeps your number; the travel e-SIM carries the mobile data. WhatsApp needs your number only when you register or verify the app. After that it simply needs an internet connection, and the travel e-SIM provides one. Your chats, groups and contacts stay exactly as they are.

Set up your phone like this

  1. Keep your home line switched on, so your number stays reachable for calls and SMS.
  2. Set the travel e-SIM as the line for mobile data, and turn on Data Roaming for it.
  3. To avoid roaming charges from your home operator, leave Data Roaming off on your home line.

WhatsApp messages and WhatsApp calls then go over the travel data. Ordinary calls and SMS to your own number are still billed by your home operator.

Do not use “Change number”

WhatsApp has a Change number feature, and it is the wrong tool here. Most travel e-SIMs are data-only and have no number that could receive WhatsApp’s verification code. There is nothing to change: keep using WhatsApp on your own number.

If WhatsApp asks you to verify abroad

WhatsApp asks for verification when you reinstall it or move to a new phone. The code is sent by SMS — or by a phone call if you ask for one — to your own number. So keep your home line active and able to receive SMS while you travel; your home operator may charge for receiving them abroad. Better still, avoid reinstalling WhatsApp or switching phones during the trip.

Never give up your home number

WhatsApp’s own help pages are clear on this: if you lose access to the number your account is registered with, you can lose the account. Do not cancel or let your home number lapse while you are away.

Before you buy

Check that your phone supports e-SIM in the compatible devices list, then pick your destination — for example Türkiye, or a regional plan if you are crossing borders.
